Dr Jessica Trusler

Dr Jessica Trusler

Dr Jessica Trusler is Medical Director of BARC SA. A Clinical Pathologist, Dr. Trusler has been involved in clinical trials across Africa for more than 10 years. Highly recognized in academic circles, Dr. Trusler served as a registrar for the SAIMR at Chris Hani Baragwanath & Johannesburg Hospitals and thereafter as a consultant for the NHLS in the Chemical Pathology Department at the University of the Witwatersrand.

A keen student, Dr. Trusler continues to invest in training & personal development to ensure that she and her staff remain at the cutting edge in the role of pathology in clinical research, effective laboratory and disease management. Dr. Trusler holds a MBChB (UCT), DCH (SA), DTM&H (WITS), FC(PATH)CLIN (SA), MMED Clinical Pathology (WITS). She is currently a member of SACRA, SAMA, IDDSA, SEMSDA, and SAAP.

Her day to day activities involve management of the organization; planning for growth; monitoring of and adherence to Quality Assurance Programs and GLP & GCLP; tendering for quotes and liaison with clients and colleagues.


Marlene Kassel

Marlene Kassel

Marlene Kassel joined BARC SA in 2005 as Chief Operations Officer. Her wide spectrum of experience in the field of microbiology includes clinical trials management, research, training, human relations and staff management.

Mrs Kasssel previously worked for the National Health Laboratory Service (formerly the South African Institute for Medical Research) for 25 years as Chief Technologist before becoming Laboratory Manager of Infection Control Services.

Mrs Kassel has collaborated on articles published in the European Respiratory Journal, the Journal of Hospital Infection, the Southern African Journal of Epidemiology and Infection and the Journal of clinical Microbiology. Her poster presentations include Vancomycin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Occurs in South Africa and Glycopeptide Resistance in a Clinical Isolate of Bacillus Lentus in South Africa.


Peter Meewes

Peter Meewes

Peter Meewes joined BARC in 2005 as National Laboratory Manager South Africa.

As a microbiologist, he has spent more than 20 years working in clinical trials in Southern Africa. His experience includes heading up the Department of Serology and the incorporation of Endocrine and Allergies into the Serology Department for Dr CE Niehaus and work as a medical technologist and laboratory manager.

Mr Meewes has published widely, presented papers at conferences and attended international congresses including Allergology and Clinical Immunology in Australia and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network Conference in Washington.

Mr Meewes has extensive experience in PBMC processing and training as well as in setting up BARC’s world class Biobanking facility.


Carole

Carole Wallis

Carole Wallis is Head of the Specialty Molecular Division. She has a broad background in virology and molecular techniques, with specific training and expertise in HIV-1 drug resistance in subtype C and has carried out several studies looking at the development of drug resistance patterns in HIV-1 subtype C, the impact these mutations will have on newer antiretroviral compounds and the use of different diagnostic assays to detect these mutations.

She has supervised several post graduate degrees and is involved as a virologist on several large international studies.
