BARC S.A. Pty., Ltd., established in 1996, is the South African arm of Bio Analytical Research Corporation (BARC), an independent and dedicated global central clinical trials laboratory operational since 1985. The international head office is in Ghent, Belgium and the local head office is in Johannesburg.

Dr Jessica Trusler, MB ChB (UCT), DCH (SA), DTM&H (Wits), FC(Path)CLIN (SA), is a clinical pathologist who has had experience working as a laboratory manager, quality assurance manager and COO in Clinical Trials labs in both the private and state sectors over last 5 years. Jessica started officially at BARC SA in May 2005 and has built up a team of experienced clinical trials managers in this unit. Marlene Kassel (CO.O.), Peter Meewes (Lab Manager), Glenda Kuntashula (Quality Assurance Officer) and Tahera Seejarim (IT Manager) work in conjunction with a team of GCLP-trained project managers and technical staff in order to provide quality service in the clinical trials laboratory environment.

BARC SA is a joint venture between BARC Belgium and a South African 'state of the art' clinical pathology laboratory, Lancet Laboratories. Lancet Laboratories brings a wealth of local knowledge to the joint venture, having provided a pathology service to the medical community since 1952. The joint venture allows for provision of Lancet expertise to BARC S.A. in the terms of local medical (45 pathologists), IT and QA capabilities.

BARC S.A. is ISO 17025/GLP accredited by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS). The laboratory also adheres to GCP/ICH, CLIA 88, NCCLS and CAP guidelines and Quality Control programs.

BARC SA thus offers a dedicated clinical trials team, a stand-alone safety laboratory (Hitachi and Coulter technology) along with the facilities of Lancet as backup for the more esoteric pathology needs. Due to the international status of the company, BARC S.A. is involved in many international multi centre studies.
