Dr Carole Wallis
Dr Carole Wallis is the Medical Director for BARC SA. She oversees all the aspects of BARC SA. She has an MSc MED and a PhD in Molecular Medicine and Medical Biochemistry and serves as a virologist on several different NIH protocols. She serves on the executive committee of the adult AIDS Clinical Trial Group. She has been involved in numerous clinical trials over the last ten years and has over 100 publications. She is a member of Southern African HIV Clinicians Society HIV Drug Resistance Expert Forum and a member of the Scientific Committee for International HIV Drug Resistance Workshop. She also serves as a consultant for different groups.
Marlene Kassel
Mrs Kassel previously worked for the National Health Laboratory Service (formerly the South African Institute for Medical Research) for 25 years as Chief Technologist before becoming Laboratory Manager of Infection Control Services.
Mrs Kassel has collaborated on articles published in the European Respiratory Journal, the Journal of Hospital Infection, the Southern African Journal of Epidemiology and Infection and the Journal of clinical Microbiology. Her poster presentations include Vancomycin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Occurs in South Africa and Glycopeptide Resistance in a Clinical Isolate of Bacillus Lentus in South Africa.
Peter Meewes
Peter Meewes joined BARC SA in 2005 as National Laboratory Manager South Africa. As a microbiologist, he has spent more than 20 years working in clinical trials in Southern Africa. His experience includes heading up the Department of Serology and the incorporation of Endocrine and Allergies into the Serology Department for Dr CE Niehaus and work as a medical technologist and laboratory manager. Peter Meewes has published widely, presented papers at conferences and attended international congresses including Allergology and Clinical Immunology in Australia and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network Conference in Washington. Peter Meewes has extensive experience in PBMC processing and training as well as in setting up BARC’s world class Biobanking facility.
